BPA defunding the SAFE program

You’ve probably read about the Bonneville Power Administration’s decision last June to stop funding the Select Areas Fisheries Enhancement program. While some have condemned this decision as being detrimental to wild salmon populations, especially Oregon’s and Washington’s departments of fish and wildlife, various environmental groups have been supportive. Here’s an opinion piece from yesterday saying that this decision was long overdue. It comes down to the same argument between those who are in favor of hatchery fish for harvest versus those who want to recover wild stocks. Surprisingly, the BPA has now taken the position long championed by some conservation groups.
