Last month’s Crooked River call notes stated that an agreement had been made to keep flows at the CAPO gauge in Prineville at 80 cfs through irrigation season. I just received the June meeting notes which now state that “a minimum 20cfs will pass CAPO when NUID does not order water”. As I write this the CAPO gauge shows 20.4 cfs. The CRSO gauge near the NUID pumping station is also falling dramatically today. Irrigation interests always win over fish. I know that most anglers focus on the Wild & Scenic section below Bowman Dam which will continue to have good flows during irrigation season, but low and hot water below Prineville is bad news for the anadromous fish reintroduction program, especially spring chinook. I’m heading to Canada for 10 days on Sunday but would love to see photos of the Crooked just below Prineville if anyone is going that way. Unfortunately, we’ve seen this sort of thing before.
